Supporters didn't need to wait long for goals in this clash between German giants Bayern, whom the Puskás Academy team defeated 3-0 in their previous match, and Panathinaikos of Greece. In just the tenth minute, Younes Aithamer broke forward down the left and crossed for the arriving Yusuf Kabadayi who diverted the ball with his left foot into the centre of the goal to put Bayern in front. Pana had been in almost complete control of their previous match against Osijek so it was somewhat of a surprise that the Germans were clearly in charge, something which became even more apparent when Grant Mamedova's penalty doubled their lead.

By midway through the second period, Pana coach Konstantinos Frantzeskos had made all his substitutions in an attempt to change the course of the match and one of those replacements, Dimitrios Kostopoulos, was to prove the game-changer, his first touch in the 38th minute being one that sent the ball flying past Liarn Batakat in the Bayern goal to reduce the Germans' advantage to a single goal. That lead was wiped out in the 52nd minute by another Greek substitute, Pantelidis, who crashed a half-volley off the crossbar abd behind the goal line to make the scores 2-2, a scoreline which remained the same until the end of the match.
